“These are the times that try men’s souls:  The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country, but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.”

Thomas Paine - December 19, 1776 - The American Crisis

Dear Friends:

Patriotic - George Washington - Crossing the DelawareThe above excerpt from Paine’s The American Crisis has a special meaning to Americans.   With those inspiring words ringing in their ears on the blustery Christmas night of 1776, what remained of Washington’s beleaguered and bedraggled army boarded boats and crossed the ice-clogged Delaware River. In the daring surprise attack that followed, they defeated the Hessian mercenaries at Trenton.  That victory saved the American Revolution.

By their sacrifices that Christmas night, those American patriots gave the gift of a free and strong nation to their children and the generations that followed.

Now, it is up to you and me to make sure our generation passes that gift to our children and future generations.  Your donation to the Thomas More Law Center will help do just that.

Today, we face another crisis that threatens our existence as a free and strong nation.

You Understand:

• America’s crisis involves more than economics.  It involves the corruption and arrogance of power in Washington and Wall Street.
• Our national existence depends upon a strong military, free from “Liberally” imposed constraints of political correctness.
• Well-financed groups like the ACLU are using the courts and the metaphor, “the wall of separation between church and state,” no where found in our constitution, to destroy the religious and moral foundations of our nation.
• Radical Islamic organizations funded by Middle East oil money are infiltrating our institutions and seeking to destroy America from within.
• We cannot rely on the major political parties and “politics as usual” to confront and resolve our current national crises.

We Rely on Patriotic Americans

We believe in American exceptionalism, and we do not accept the notion the best days of America have passed.  We believe in an independent and sovereign America, free from the constraints of a “one world order.”  We are outraged when our leaders bow down to human kings, and apologize on behalf of Americans to other nations, nations we defended with American blood.

We exist because of donations from patriotic Americans like you who share our principles.  With your help, the Thomas More Law Center has become the “point of the spear” in the legal battle to maintain a strong and free America, and to restore and preserve our nation’s Christian heritage and moral values.

So as 2009 comes to a close, and you consider your year-end charitable giving, please consider sending a special tax-deductible, year-end gift to the Thomas More Law Center.

As you consider the size of your year-end gift, please think about the magnitude of the current crisis our nation is facing, and what the Law Center has done and what it will do in 2010.

Together we can confront—without compromise—America’s crisis. Here are just some of the many legal battles the Law Center has waged, or is waging on your behalf right now:

• Defending Marine LtCol Jeffrey Chessani. The Law Center confronted the immense power of the federal government and Congressman John Murtha to defend LtCol Jeffrey Chessani.  LtCol Chessani was made a political scapegoat and criminally charged for the legitimate combat action taken by four of his Marines in Haditha, Iraq on November 19, 2005.  We succeeded in getting the charges dismissed.  We won the government appeal of that dismissal.  Then, we defended Chessani before a Board of Inquiry which found him not guilty of any misconduct and allowed him to retire at his current rank.

• Defending a Christmas Nativity Display.  We filed a lawsuit to restore a Nativity display that had been privately maintained on a public median during Christmas for the past 63 years.  The display was ordered removed by the Macomb County, Michigan Road Commission after they received a threatening letter from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, an atheist organization.

• Defending Christmas Religious Music at School’s Winter Concert.  We filed a lawsuit challenging New Jersey’s Maplewood – South Orange School District policy prohibiting the playing of Christmas religious music (even instrumentals without words) during their winter concert.  After years of playing such music, the School District stopped all religious music from being played at the concert because one parent complained.  We are now in the appellate process after the lower court dismissed the case.

• Challenging AIG and the Federal Reserve.  We filed a federal lawsuit challenging the Federal Government’s $150 billion bailout of AIG.  The basis of the lawsuit is that AIG owns a subsidiary that promotes Sharia Law — the body of Islamic law based on the Koran that calls for the murder of Christians and Jews.

• Challenging Janet Napolitano and the Dept. of Homeland Security.  We filed a federal lawsuit against Janet Napolitano and the Department of Homeland Security over their publication of a nine page intelligence Assessment.  The Assessment targeted Americans who oppose abortion, same–sex marriage, restrictions on firearms ownership, and veterans returning home from Iraq, as right wing extremists and potential terrorists.

• Defending a Teacher’s Right to Display Patriotic Slogans.  We filed a lawsuit on behalf of high school teacher Brad Johnson who was ordered to remove several banners from his classroom that contained historical slogans such as “In God We Trust,” “One Nation under God,” and the preamble to the Declaration of Independence.  California school officials told Johnson his banners promoted an impermissible “Judeo/Christian” viewpoint and would make Muslims uncomfortable.  He has been displaying the banners for the past 20 years without a single complaint.

• Fighting the Radical Homosexual Agenda.  We filed a lawsuit on behalf of Crystal Dixon, an African American who was fired by the University of Toledo for writing an opinion piece in the local newspaper in which she expressed opposition to those who equated homosexual issues with the civil rights struggles of African Americans.

For the past several years, we have been fighting attempts by radical homosexual groups to change the definition of marriage. The Law Center drafted Michigan’s constitutional amendment that defined marriage as between one man and one woman.  And our West Coast Director played an instrumental roll in the passage of California’s Marriage Amendment, Proposition 8.

• Fighting for Pro-life Advocates. The Law Center has filed several lawsuits defending the rights of pro-life activists and organizations to express their pro-life messages in the public square.  These efforts include defending the right of public school students to wear pro-life t-shirts to school.  Moreover, the Law Center is leading a national effort to enact state constitutional Human Life Amendments in order to mount a direct challenge to the central holding of Roe v.Wade. We drafted state personhood amendments for Georgia, Oregon, and Montana.  We also assisted Michigan and Colorado pro-life activists with their state personhood amendments.

None of these cases and matters could have been handled without the generous support of patriotic Americans.
